Modern Clay Outdoor Planters and Plant Pots

Outdoor planters are a great addition to any patio or deck thanks to their welcoming, organic look. Bursting with foliage, outdoor plant pots bring life to your outdoor living space through color, texture, and aroma. From added privacy to useful potted herb gardens, modern patio planters serve a myriad of uses in addition to being an eye-catching outdoor accessory. When choosing the right garden planter, the material is very important. We love clay outdoor planters because the natural, yet delicate material has a porous surface that allows air and water to pass through easily, keeping the soil and roots of your plant moist. At the same time, clay plant pots easily wick away excess moisture preventing root rot. In addition to their practicality, clay planters are desirable for their beauty. From naturally beautiful terracotta planters to unique ceramic clay planters that have been glazed in a variety of colors, you can easily find a unique and on-trend pot for your garden that's as beautiful as the flora they hold.

Types of Clay Pots

Shopping for clay planters can be confusing because they are referred to as stoneware, earthernware, terracotta or even ceramic. Here is a breakdown of the different types of clay pots.

  • Stoneware: A broad term for pottery that has been fired at relatively high temperatures, making it very strong and chip-resistant. Stoneware is a dense, non-porous material it's great for water-loving plants.
  • Earthenware: Clay that has been fired at a lower temperature making it relatively softer and more porous than stoneware.
  • Terracotta: A type of earthenware clay pottery that has a higher iron content giving this material it's rich red orange hue. Clay pots made of terracotta are fired at a relatively low temperature and are great for plants that don’t need to hold water since the porous nature of terracttoa lets more moisture and more air pass through.
  • Ceramic: Unlike traditional pottery which only uses clay, ceramics can have other minerals added to the clay to fortify it. These fortifications come in the form of glazes, mineral additives and other ingredients in the clay that make it more durable and long-lasting. Depending on the glaze, ceramic plant pots can be porous or non-porous so you can find the style that suits the needs of your plants
  • Styling Clay Outdoor Planters

Practical and beautiful, modern clay patio planters are one of the most popular options in the market. For a landscape design that incorporates a lot of cacti and succulents, go for a terracotta outdoor planter. The neutral tones of a clay patio planter exude minimalist sophistication and contrast beautifully with the color and pointed leaves of aloe plants. If you prefer a bold and colorful statement, go for a ceramic plant pot that comes in a bold hue like blue, green, or orange. The pops of color on a glazed clay outdoor planter look great next to your patio furniture. Regardless of your desired aesthetic, clay garden planters are the perfect way to create gorgeous focal points in your outdoor living space you can't take your eyes off.
