Inspired by the bold shapes of Bauhaus and midcentury designs, Stephane Fontaine's "Function" series juxtaposes a stark palette of black and white with heavily textured layers of paint to create movement and a calm resting place for the eye. "I like the minimalist approach of how the circle meets the square in these art movements. I modernized this by placing my designs directly onto textured canvases," explains the artist. Reproduced here to emulate the artist's original techniques. Hangs in two orientations.
Stephane Fontaine is an Ontario-based artist who favors exploring different materials, mediums and subjects, never settling on a single style. "The only thing that matters to me is being completely and utterly in the present moment," he says. "This is the essence of creativity."
